The Office of the Environmental Steward was created as part of
Mayor Michael B. Coleman's Get Green Columbus initiative.
Funded in part with a grant from the
Solid Waste
Authority of Central Ohio, the Environmental Steward's Office is
dedicated to making Columbus a green community. Our work
is focused on three goals:

Progress
to Date
Get Green Columbus initiative is now four years
old, and we have made much progress toward the goals set
in 2005. Read the 2008 full report. It
outlines the work we’ve done together to protect our

GreenSpot
Program
Is
a recognition program for Columbus residents that are taking steps to protect the environment. You can make your home, school or business a GreenSpot. The program launched July 30, 2008.

Rain Barrel Workshop:
Rain barrels capture and reuse rainwater, reduce
utility bills, & help protect the water supply.
Columbus residents who attend sponsored workshops will be
eligible to purchase a rain barrel at a cost share
price of $30 (funded by City of Columbus & FLOW).

Pedal
Instead - OSU Home Games
The City will be hosting a FREE bike corral at OSU
home football games. The corral is on the west side
of Ohio Stadium near Olentangy Trail, just south of
Woody Hayes Drive.

Manual
Outlines the steps involved in developing community gardens including: securing City land, resources for garden maintenance, availability of materials & various community groups that assist citizens in the process.

Air Alert Action Day Plan
Columbus’ Air Alert Action Plan outlines the specific
operational actions each City department will take during
an issued air alert to:
1) minimize the formation of ozone and emission of
particulate matter into Central Ohio’s air, and
2) to inform City employees regarding the risks and
encourage best personal responses to an air alert.

Green Fleet
The City of Columbus has approximately 3,100 on-road
and 2,800 off-road vehicles, which consumed
approximately 3.6 million gallons of fuel in 2007. As part
of the Get Green Columbus initiative, the City is working to
reduce vehicle fuel consumption and emissions. The Mayor
released an update to the City’s Green Fleet Policy, going
into effect on January 1, 2008.

Climate Protection
On February 22, 2007, Mayor Coleman, with the support of City
Council, signed the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement.
Since then, the City has completed its baseline greenhouse
gas emission inventory for its operations, and is starting to
work on its Action Plan to reduce these emissions.

Central Ohio Goes Green
On October 4, 2007, Mayor Michael Coleman joined with
elected officials from 12 other local jurisdictions in signing
the Central Ohio Green Pact. The Pact represents a new,
multi-jurisdictional commitment to Get Green with policies
that enhance and protect the quality of life, environment
and economic vibrancy of our region.

Green Memo & Principles
In January 2005, Mayor Michael B. Coleman issued
a comprehensive
environmental policy statement, "Get Green
Columbus, Environmental Stewardship in the 21st
Century." Known as the Green Memo, it sets forth
the city's commitment to making Columbus a greener place to
live. In addition, the City has recently adopted a
statement of values, known as the Green Principles.
